Job summary

WSP USA’s Federal Power and Energy Team seeks a Lead Substation Electrical Engineer, ideally based in Boise, ID; Honolulu, HI; Virginia Beach, VA; or Huntsville AL, with flexibility for other locations.

You will lead design for 115kV/35kV substations, perform advanced calculations, and mentor junior staff while coordinating with owners and multiple disciplines.

The role requires PE licensure, US citizenship, and a proven track record on DoD projects within a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• 10+ years of experience with design and specification of medium voltage power distribution systems and 15kV–115kV substations.
• Professional Engineering license (PE).
• US citizenship is required due to client requirements.
• Knowledge of UFCs, UFGSs, FCs, NEC, ANSI/IEEE, NFPA, ICC standards.
• Direct experience as a consultant on DOD projects.
• Proven ability to lead and mentor other engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering efforts for substation projects across the US and internationally.
• Develop and review single lines, three lines, equipment layouts, grounding, protection/relaying, and lighting.
• Develop electrical calculations: load, short circuit, arc flash, voltage drop, cable sizing, grounding.
• Prepare contract documents, construction phasing, and updated layout plans.
• Mentor junior staff and coordinate with owners, disciplines, and sub-consultants.
• Provide guidance during field investigations and support QA/QC processes.
