Job summary

The Search AI Company is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Elasticsearch Storage Engine team. You will steer the technical vision for core storage and query engine, optimize performance for observability workloads, and guide architecture across distributed teams.

You will mentor engineers, triage issues, and drive industry-leading solutions for storage efficiency, query processing, and data layouts. Strong Java and AI-driven design are essential.

Qualifications

• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams.

• Proven track record using AI to accelerate development and debug complex systems.
• Prompt-engineering mindset to leverage AI agents effectively.
• Experience indexing, storing, and querying time-series or logs data.

Responsibilities

• Lead architectural evolution of core storage engine components, resolving bottlenecks in layouts, serialization, and resource use.
• Drive cross-organizational initiatives for observability solutions.
• Work with globally distributed engineers focused on logs and metrics in Elasticsearch.
• Introduce best practices for clean coding, simplify complex system behavior, and bring architectural clarity.
• Serve as SME across Elasticsearch areas, mentoring the engineering org.
• Collaborate with domain experts to triage, resolve, and review issues and PRs.
• Write idiomatic modern Java—Elasticsearch is 99.8% Java!
