Job summary

Airbnb is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Payments Risk Engineering team. You will design and build scalable risk services across our payments platform, collaborating with product, data science, and operations to detect and mitigate fraudulent activity.

The role emphasizes building reliable APIs, real-time risk detection, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure a secure and scalable payments experience for guests and hosts worldwide.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of relevant industry experience (Payments/Fintech) as a backend software engineer.
• Proficient in Java/Kotlin/Python; React experience nice to have.
• Exposure to architectural patterns of large, high-scale web applications (APIs, data pipelines, efficient algorithms).
• Passion for end-to-end delivery from ideation to testing and rollout.
• Strong focus on code quality, automated tests, and engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain a long-term technology stack with well defined APIs and modular design.
• Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and other teams to build features and respond to fraud/risk issues.
• Integrate with third-party vendors/payments networks to power in-house risk systems.
• Develop and iterate risk detection, mitigation, and resolution strategies as requirements evolve.
• Improve monitoring and observability of risk systems and collaborate across Airbnb engineering teams.
