Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for the Copilot AI Models team. You will build, maintain, and evolve scalable backend services and APIs powering Copilot features, with a focus on reliability and performance.

You will work on distributed systems, collaborate with engineers and product managers, and contribute to architectural decisions that balance latency, cost, and maintainability while upholding GitHub's standards for on‑call readiness and code quality.

Qualifications

• 6+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven production software experience in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
• Associate’s Degree in a related field with 5+ years experience in software engineering and production coding in the listed languages.
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience in production software coding.
• Master’s Degree in a related field with 2+ years of relevant experience.
• Doctorate in a related field.
• Equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing opportunities, and code reviews to help others grow.
• Own and advocate for the health and quality of the systems the team builds, including on‑call rotations.
• Write architecture briefs and proposals, run code experiments, and build prototypes for planetary-scale capabilities.
• Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
• Utilize CI/CD tools to set up automated pipelines for continuous integration and delivery.
• Become intimately familiar with the systems you build and write maintainable code.
