Job summary

Bankwell is seeking an experienced credit professional to lead the underwriting and analysis for government-guaranteed loans (SBA 7(a) and 504, USDA) and conventional business loans. This role reports to the Director of Credit with minimal supervision and requires extensive SBA expertise.

Responsibilities include interpreting financial statements, analyzing cash flow, preparing detailed loan memos, and ensuring timely loan closing in line with policy.

Qualifications

• College degree in accounting, economics or finance preferred.
• Minimum 10+ years SBA loan underwriting or commercial loan underwriting experience.
• Must possess strong credit and organizational skills, meet deadlines, work well under pressure and have advanced communication skills – listening, written and verbal.
• Working knowledge of SBA and USDA B&I policies, procedures and regulations.
• Organized, detail oriented and can complete multiple tasks effectively and in a timely manner.
• Ability to prioritize work and perform under limited supervision.
• Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and Zoom.
• Commercial lending experience and working in a community bank environment a plus.

Responsibilities

• Interpret financial statements, tax returns and projections.
• Analyze cash flow, global cash flow, financial capacity, and collateral requirements.
• Prepare high-quality, detailed loan memos with in-depth credit analysis and risk identification.
• Prepare loan requests within established timelines per Bank policy.
• Consult with Business Development Officer/Management on loan structuring to limit risk.
• Review third-party reports, appraisals and valuations as required.
• Collaborate with Management to meet lending goals and objectives.
• Maintain high-quality customer service and effective communication with partners.
