Job summary

Bankwell is seeking a Director of Credit Underwriting to lead the credit underwriting function, ensuring timely and accurate loan analyses while upholding policy standards. This senior role manages a team of seven, drives risk controls, and coordinates with PCG and SBA teams to support portfolio growth.

The position requires extensive experience in commercial credit, formal credit training, and strong leadership, with a focus on regulatory compliance and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications

• Minimum 10+ years’ experience in commercial credit at a bank or lending institution.
• Formal credit training through bank programs or higher education.
• Minimum 7 years of direct team leadership experience.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; masters preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead the credit underwriting function for timely, accurate loan analysis.
• Monitor loan maturities and coordinate renewal analysis with PCG management.
• Ensure adherence to Bank Loan Policy and internal controls.
• Manage a 7-person Credit Underwriting team including staffing and performance.
• Provide deal structuring input and regulatory compliance support.
• Contribute to audits, exams, and loan reviews; prepare Board materials.
