GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Portfolio Experience team. You will bring full-stack experience with a backend focus, collaborating directly with product, users, and open source contributors to shape features and drive impact.

You will evolve the backend architecture powering the work items platform, ensuring scalability for millions of items across groups and projects, with an emphasis on performance and reliability.

Qualifications

• Represent the user perspective in trade-offs with product managers and engineers.
• Lead projects with multiple engineers over months and mentor others.
• Proficient in Ruby on Rails with strong backend focus.
• Strong PostgreSQL performance optimization.
• Design and evolve GraphQL/RESTful APIs.
• Improve large automated test suites for reliability.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for asynchronous work.
• AI integration into development workflows; experience with Elasticsearch/ClickHouse or Python is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Shape requirements with product and engineers and break projects into iterations.
• Design and implement backend features and APIs with performance in mind.
• Build and evolve portfolio planning capabilities and work item hierarchies.
• Improve PostgreSQL performance through optimization and partitioning.
• Maintain automated tests and enable safe rollouts with feature flags.
• Mentor engineers and open source contributors through reviews and pairing.
