Job summary

The Washington Post seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction for Arc XP's next-generation rendering and Experience Composition platform. This individual-contributor leadership role operates at both architectural and implementation levels, partnering with architects, product managers, and senior engineers to translate strategy into scalable systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating highly scalable software systems.
• Experience providing technical leadership and setting direction for complex initiatives.
• Deep knowledge of modern web rendering, distributed and event-driven systems, APIs, caching and CDNs.
• Strong experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web frameworks such as React, Astro, Next.js.
• Experience designing platform APIs, extensibility models, and leading architectural initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and implementation of Arc XP's rendering and Experience Composition.
• Design edge-rendering and edge-composition architectures and migrate to event-driven render-on-update models.
• Develop scalable platform, rendering, and compilation APIs and evolve component architectures for reuse.
• Design APIs that enable AI systems to create, compose, and update pages and components.
• Provide senior technical leadership across Rendering, Delivery, Themes, and PageBuilder.
• Mentor engineers through architecture discussions and code reviews.
• Focus on reliability, observability, performance, security, and cost, including production operations.
