Job summary

Lithios Inc. seeks a Research Scientist to join the R&D, engineering, and manufacturing teams in Medford, MA.

The role focuses on electrode structures and cell architectures to improve lithium extraction performance, with hands-on responsibilities and collaboration with suppliers and partners. The ideal candidate has 5+ years in electrochemical systems and a strong background in characterization techniques, cell design, and process translation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering or related field (or relevant experience).
• 5+ years in electrochemical systems including lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries, supercapacitors, capacitive deionization, electrolyzers, fuel cells, electrodeposition, or electrowinning.
• Expertise in electrochemical techniques: potentiometry, constant current/potential methods, cyclic voltammetry, EIS; materials characterization such as SEM/XRD/XPS/porosimetry is a plus.
• Experience developing, optimizing, and characterizing electrodes, cells, or processes; experience with flow cells and porous electrodes is a plus.
• Strong understanding of kinetics, mass transport, and rate capability in electrochemical systems; ability to design experiments and translate results into engineering improvements.
• Ability to independently drive technical projects from problem definition through validation and implementation.
• Comfort working hands-on with systems and iterating quickly in a dynamic startup environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute experiments to quantify electrode and cell performance.
• Correlate material and fluid properties with performance and guide design decisions with data.
• Develop and optimize electrode structures, compositions, and fabrication methods.
• Establish performance metrics and iteratively improve lithium extraction rates and efficiency.
• Translate lab-scale results into practical cell designs and manufacturing approaches.
• Communicate technical challenges and results across the organization to advance product development.
• Mentor and lead junior engineers and technicians.
