Senior Quality Engineer - API

Remote - Central or East Coast

Role Overview

As a Senior Quality Engineer - Backend, you will validate the performance, functionality, and reliability of our consumer platform. This hands-on, technical role combines SQL and API testing expertise with a quality mindset to identify issues early and develop a robust testing strategy. You will define QA standards, collaborate with product and engineering teams, and focus initially on manual testing with a transition to automation.

Key Responsibilities

1. Test backend data APIs and validate data flows with SQL validations.
2. Design and implement automated test suites for RESTful APIs.
3. Create and execute manual test plans, capturing edge cases.
4. Work with Product Managers to understand user flows and define test cases.
5. Engage early with engineering to embed quality in development.
6. Develop strategies for API contract testing and performance benchmarking.
7. Build tools to streamline testing and reduce manual efforts.
8. Analyze logs and traces to diagnose system issues.
9. Lead end-to-end testing for the Consumer Platform, including UI, APIs, and Data Platform.
10. Establish and promote QA standards and best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years in backend or API-focused quality engineering roles.
• Strong SQL skills and experience validating large datasets.
• Experience testing RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Hands-on with manual testing and test case development.
• Familiar with API testing tools (Postman, REST Assured, Karate).
• Knowledge of API contract testing tools (Pact, OpenAPI validators).
• Understanding of HTTP protocols, headers, status codes, payload validation.
• Proficiency in Python or JavaScript for automation.
• Excellent communication skills and collaborative mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in ad tech, data, or analytics.
• Knowledge of data pipelines and backend platforms.
• Experience with performance/load testing tools (JMeter, Gatling, k6).
• Familiarity with API gateways, mocking, service virtualization.
• Exposure to event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pub/Sub).
• Understanding of OAuth2, JWT protocols.

The salary range is $78,400 - $134,400, varies based on experience and location.
