Job summary

Astra Space Operations, LLC is seeking a Production CNC Programmer in California. You will primarily program CNC mills and lathes, including 3- to 5-axis machines, with NX CAM, while collaborating with setup and operator personnel to drive jobs to completion.

You will interpret drawings, select tools and workholding, and manage tool life, fixtures, and inspection during in-process checks. This role reports to the Production Shop Manager.

Qualifications

• 8+ years experience as a CNC machinist in a fast-paced shop.
• 2+ years experience with NX CAM.
• Experience keeping setup/operator personnel supplied with pre-programmed jobs and setups.
• Mentorship ability and direction to team members.
• Ability to make priority scheduling decisions for machines and operators.
• Experience programming/running CNC lathes with live tooling.
• Experience programming/running 5-axis mills, mill-turns, and horizontal mills.
• Ability to calculate feeds and speeds and solve geometry problems.
• Knowledge of material types, grades, and machinability.
• Proficiency with calipers, micrometers, gauges, and surface plate inspection.
• Understanding GD&T and shop drawings.
• Ability to lift 40+ lbs and maneuver equipment as required.
• Maintain clean work area and perform basic preventive maintenance.
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, and email.
• Experience working with machine/CAM vendors to resolve issues.
• Attention to detail, urgency, and a proactive attitude.

Responsibilities

• Interpret dimensioned drawings to select tools, workholding, and inspection equipment.
• Use CAM software to program production CNC machines and select tools.
• Lead production on your machines with pre-programmed jobs and guidance.
• Set up or operate CNC machines; hand off to support staff when needed.
• Inspect in-process parts using handheld tools, in coordination with Quality Control.
• Communicate with shop staff, engineering, and vendors professionally.
• Identify bottlenecks and propose improvements to shop flow.
