Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Product Counsel to guide hardware products and the software powering them. You will work with product, design, engineering and business teams from development through launch and ongoing support.

The role emphasizes licensing, regulatory compliance, privacy and IP, translating complex technical concepts into practical guidance while balancing risk and product goals.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of legal experience in product counseling for consumer devices or software embedded in hardware.
• Experience in in-house and/or tech-focused law firm environments.

Responsibilities

• Advise on a broad range of hardware and software issues from development to launch and support.
• Support software and firmware licensing, open-source, compatibility and device support.
• Provide counsel on consumer experiences, user terms, disclosures, marketing claims and regulatory requirements.
• Advise on product, IP, privacy, security, competition and regulatory issues to align product decisions with policy requirements.
• Build practical guidance and review processes and manage emerging issues across teams.
