Job summary

Cenovus Energy is hiring a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer to lead the US Process Safety competency across refineries and support policy development beyond the US. This role acts as the US Region’s SME and will coordinate with Canadian counterparts to advance Cenovus Risk Methodology and PSM expertise.

The ideal candidate will have 16+ years in process safety, strong leadership of HAZOP/LOPA/HAZID, and deep knowledge of API, NFPA, CCPS codes with US regulatory familiarity.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field.
• 16+ years working directly in a Process Safety role or closely related discipline.
• 10+ years within Oil and Gas/Petrochemicals is an asset; Functional Safety Engineer Certification is an asset.
• Experience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs for a chemical/oil and gas operator; translating into SIL requirements.
• Experience in process safety information auditing or RAGAGEP verification.
• Experience in consequence modelling; PHAST software is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead Process Safety as a competency across the US Refineries—owning methodology development, regulatory and code interpretation, and industry policy representation.
• Build and develop competent Process Safety Engineers trained in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, etc.).
• Design, deliver, and maintain a comprehensive risk-training suite for site personnel, including QA/QC of site deliverables and ongoing development of new team members.
• Champion and safeguard key risk standards across the organization (PHA standard, RMP compliance, etc.).
• Directly conduct/coordinate centrally managed third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis, etc.).
• Drive and support assurance audits within the PSM space.
