Job summary

Apex Companies is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer based in Portland, OR or Vancouver, WA to lead multidisciplinary infrastructure projects across Oregon and beyond. You will drive business development, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with senior leadership to deliver complex roadway, bridge, and multimodal programs.

The role emphasizes client relationships, adherence to schedules and budgets, and applying industry standards (AASHTO, MUTCD).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• 15+ years of progressive experience managing infrastructure projects for ODOT and/or local agencies in Oregon along with similar experience in Washington.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in both Oregon and Washington, or the ability to obtain both within six months of hire.
• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary infrastructure design projects from pursuit through construction while keeping projects within scoped schedules and budgets.
• Strong knowledge of ODOT Design Manual, AASHTO, MUTCD, and Oregon State and local agency standards.
• Experience with project management, budgeting, scheduling, and client management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
• Proven business development and client relationship experience.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the project manager for multidisciplinary infrastructure projects with significant annual totals, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget adherence.
• Lead business development efforts across Oregon and Washington to grow the client base and opportunities.
• Develop and maintain strong client relationships, identify new project opportunities, and expand existing accounts.
• Serve as Project Manager or Principal-in-Charge for complex infrastructure projects from planning through construction.
• Oversee scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client satisfaction.
• Provide technical leadership for roadway, highway, intersection, bridge, multimodal, and corridor projects.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across roads, drainage, utilities, structures, traffic and environment.
• Manage multiple assignments while collaborating with senior leadership.
• Prepare and review technical reports, studies, and design documents.
• Mentor junior engineers and project managers to build leadership capabilities.
• Represent the firm at client meetings and industry events to strengthen market presence.
• Promote collaborative, client-focused culture and ensure safe, on-time, on-budget delivery.
