Job summary

McKinstry is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Engineer to join our New Construction Mechanical Department in Portland, OR. You will lead preconstruction activities, own conceptual estimates for mechanical systems, and collaborate with project managers to ensure smooth transition from design to construction.

You will manage scope, budget, risk, and opportunities, support sales with budget and scope letters, and guide a team through design, estimation, and procurement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering or equivalent work experience.
• 3–7 years of experience in engineering, project management, or construction.
• GC or major mechanical subcontractor experience preferred.
• Basic estimating skills required.
• Advanced knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• PE/CPM/LEED designations preferred but not required.
• Understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.
• Scheduling software: MS Project, Primavera and/or SureTrak preferred.
• OSHA 10 or 30 class preferred.

Responsibilities

• Preconstruction management for projects from conceptual to detailed stages.
• Own all conceptual estimates for new mechanical construction.
• Support budget management and risk/opportunities for projects.
• Manage design to construction phase with scope and budget focus.
• Partner with Project Managers for smooth transition between preconstruction and construction.
• Develop and review scope letters and budgets for conceptual plans.
• Lead department improvements to deliver quality to clients.
