Job summary

McKinstry is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Engineer to join the New Construction Mechanical Department. The role focuses on conceptual estimating, budget oversight, and managing projects from design through permitting.

Strong collaboration with Project Managers and the sales team is essential to deliver accurate budgets and robust scope letters. Ideal candidates bring 3–7 years in engineering, PM, or construction, plus basic estimating skills and proficiency with MS Office, MS Project,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering or equivalent work experience required.
  • Three to seven years of experience in engineering, project management, or construction is required.
  • Experience working for a General Contractor or Major Mechanical Subcontractor preferred.
  • Basic estimating skills required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required.
  • PE, CPM, LEED designations preferred, but not required.
  • Understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.
  • Proficient with scheduling software: Microsoft Project, Primavera and/or Suretrak preferred.
  • Completed OSHA 10 or 30 class preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preconstruction management: manage conceptual estimates and budgets from narrative/architectural plans.
  • Own conceptual estimates for mechanical systems and support budget management.
  • Support design phase management, risk management, and opportunities for budget.
  • Manage project from early design through construction and permitting.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers for a smooth preconstruction to construction handoff.
  • Develop scope letters and budgets with the sales team for conceptual plans.
  • Mentor team members and lead project meetings; ensure quality deliverables.
