Job summary

McKinstry is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Engineer to join the New Construction Mechanical Department. The role focuses on conceptual estimating, budget management, and guiding projects from design through construction and permitting.

You will partner with PMs, manage risks, protect margins, and support sales in developing mechanical budgets from architectural plans. A strong emphasis on communication with clients and cross-functional teams is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering or equivalent work experience required.
• Three (3) to seven (7) years of experience in engineering, project management, or construction is required.
• Experience working for a General Contractor or Major Mechanical Subcontractor preferred.
• Basic estimating skills required.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are required.
• PE, CPM, LEED designations are preferred, but not required.
• Understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.
• Proficient with scheduling software: Microsoft Project, Primavera and/or Suretrak preferred.
• Completed OSHA 10 or 30 class is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own conceptual estimates for new construction (mechanical).
• Manage project from early design through construction and permitting.
• Partner with Project Managers to ensure smooth transition between preconstruction and construction.
• Protect and enhance gross margin on all projects.
• Support and participate in business development activities, including development of budgets and scope letters.
• Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors for pricing input and cost control.
• Lead project meetings and develop staffing plans; mentor team members.
• Coach and mentor project team members and establish project governance.
