Job summary

McKinstry is seeking a Senior Preconstruction Engineer to join our New Construction Mechanical Department in Portland, OR. The role covers preconstruction management, budgeting, and maintaining margins across projects from early design through permitting.

You will support sales with conceptual budgets, scope letters, and risk assessment, while mentoring team members and coordinating with Project Managers for smooth transitions to construction. Excellent communication with clients is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering.
• 3–7 years of engineering, project management or construction experience.
• Experience with a General Contractor or major mechanical subcontractor preferred.
• Basic estimating skills required.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Scheduling software: Microsoft Project, Primavera, SureTrak.
• PE/CPM/LEED certifications are preferred but not required.
• Understanding of accounting and financial management preferred.
• OSHA 10 or 30 class is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own all conceptual estimates for new construction (mechanical).
• Fully support management of scope and budget before construction phase.
• Support design phase management, budget management, and risk/opportunity management.
• Manage project from early design through construction and permitting.
• Partner with Project Managers for a smooth transition between preconstruction and construction.
• Develop conceptual mechanical budgets and scope letters from plans.
