IREN is seeking a Staff Engineer in Platform Engineering to shape long-term direction across multiple teams. You will coach engineers, write design docs, and deliver large pieces of work by empowering others to build them.

The role emphasizes production ownership, hands-on coding, and solving cross-team challenges with a customer-centric lens. You will drive architectural decisions with a focus on scalable systems in distributed data centers, supporting AI workloads, and operations.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including senior level or beyond.
• Deep expertise in at least one domain such as distributed systems, databases/storage, networking, data engineering, or applied AI systems.
• A track record of technical influence beyond your own team, influencing outcomes across teams.
• Coaching at scale and ability to grow engineers who build solutions.
• Evidence of multi-year technical judgement and direction setting with durable outcomes.
• Excellent written communication that persuades and remains useful over time.
• Experience owning systems in production, including operations, on-call, and incident response.
• Customer-centric design mentality focusing on making others’ work easier.
• Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to decide that something should not be built.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction across multiple teams, with a multi-year horizon.
• Raise the level of engineers through design reviews, pairing on hard problems, and teaching.
• Deliver large pieces of work by growing the engineers who build them.
• Tackle cross-team problems and issues that no single team owns.
• Write design documents and technical standards used by other teams.
• Be the company depth in your domain and share that knowledge widely.
• Prototype to answer open questions with evidence-based decisions.
• Stay hands on with code, production issues, and pager duty for your domain.
• Identify and fix root causes of organizational slowdowns.
