Job summary

Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN is seeking a DMD Mechanical/Piping Design Engineer at Specialist to Senior Specialist level. You will lead upgrades, retrofits, and modifications to piping and related systems across the Y-12 complex.

You will size lines, select piping components, and apply ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASTM and AWWA codes while coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams to meet safety and mission objectives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science from ABET-accredited program in the US or equivalents, plus 4 years of relevant experience, or MS with 2 years, or PhD.
• GPA requirements apply for up to 4 years post‑graduation; ranges specified.
• DOE O 426.2A experience and nuclear safety requirements apply.
• Experience in piping system design across boilers, potable/hot/chilled water, gases, cryogenics, vacuum.
• Proficiency in pipe routing and strict adherence to ASME B31.1 and B31.3 Codes.

Responsibilities

• Perform relief valve sizing calculations per industry codes.
• Conduct walk-downs and inspections of process and utility piping systems.
• Prepare reports, drawings, data sheets, and BOMs.
• Apply ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASTM, AWWA and related standards.
• Plan and self-perform project tasks from scope to verification.
