Job summary

Baker Tilly Advisory Group, LP is seeking a Payroll Consultant to support multi-state payroll engagements and help clients optimize payroll processes. This mostly remote role requires you to be within 50 miles of a Baker Tilly office in Texas, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania.

You will review compliance, assist with setup and filings, and collaborate with clients and teams to deliver accurate, timely payroll services and maintain strong attention to detail.

Qualifications

• 3 years of payroll experience, ideally within a consulting firm, payroll provider, or in-house payroll function.
• Bachelor's degree preferred; experience can be considered in lieu of degree.
• Strong understanding of payroll processes, compliance requirements, and multistate regulations.
• Experience with payroll tax forms and filings.
• Familiarity with payroll systems such as ADP, Workday, SAP, Oracle/PeopleSoft, Paycom, Paycor, or similar platforms.
• CPP certification strongly preferred (or in progress).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Support payroll consulting engagements across a range of clients, industries, and geographies.
• Assist in assessing and improving client payroll processes, controls, and procedures.
• Perform multistate payroll compliance reviews, including federal, state, and local regulations.
• Support payroll tax activities, including preparation and review of forms (e.g., 941, 941-X, W-2C).
• Assist with payroll setup and configuration, including earnings, deductions, and tax treatments.
• Analyze payroll data to identify discrepancies, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
• Support reviews related to employee classification, wage treatment, and overtime calculations.
• Research and apply payroll regulations, including reciprocity and other multistate considerations.
• Collaborate with internal teams and clients to deliver timely, accurate, and high-quality work.
• Communicate payroll concepts and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Contribute to project deliverables and ensure work is completed on time and aligned with expectations.
