Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Systems in Chandler, Arizona seeks a Principal Optomechanical Engineer to join the Electro-Optics Group within the Launch Vehicles business unit. The role focuses on the mechanical design, analysis, and integration of optical assemblies for flight hardware.

You will perform STOP/SILOS analyses, develop parametric 3D CAD models, and collaborate across optical, systems, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure robust performance in demanding environments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s with 3+ years.
• Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance at time of application.
• Experience with opto-mechanical or precision electro-mechanical design, analysis, and integration.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the mechanical design of optical assemblies, mounts, and structures for imaging and sensing systems.
• Perform STOP and SILOS analysis to ensure performance under environmental and operational conditions.
• Develop parametric 3D CAD models and detailed part/assembly drawings with documentation.
• Collaborate with optical, systems, electrical, and manufacturing teams to ensure design feasibility and producibility.
• Support environmental test planning and correlate analysis with test results (vibration, thermal, shock).
• Participate in design reviews and present technical findings to stakeholders.
• Assist with troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and design updates for prototype and production hardware.
• Maintain error budgets related to optomechanical performance and line-of-sight stability.
