Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Systems in Chandler, AZ seeks an Optomechanical Engineer -2 to design, analyze, and integrate optical assemblies and structures for imaging and sensing systems. The role emphasizes robust performance in flight environments and collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams.

You will perform STOP/SILOS analyses, develop CAD models, and participate in environmental testing and design reviews.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with 0 years
• Active U.S. Government Secret security clearance at time of application
• Extensive experience with opto-mechanical or precision electro-mechanical design, analysis, and integration
• Familiarity with structural and thermal analysis methods and their impact on optical performance (STOP/SILOS); ANSYS experience preferred
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (CREO, NX, SolidWorks); NX experience preferred
• Experience with optical imaging systems in visible through LWIR
• Knowledge of ISO/MIL-STD standards
• Strong technical communication skills, including clear documentation and presentation of results

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the mechanical design of optical assemblies, mounts, and structures for imaging and sensing systems
• Perform STOP and SILOS analysis to ensure performance under environmental and operational conditions
• Develop parametric 3D CAD models and detailed drawings
• Collaborate with optical, systems, electrical, and manufacturing teams to refine requirements
• Support environmental test planning, execution, and correlation of analysis with test results
• Present design findings in design reviews and to stakeholders
• Support troubleshooting and design updates for prototype and production hardware
• Assist with error budgets related to optomechanical performance and line-of-sight stability
