Smartsheet is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (Observability & Telemetry Data) to set the technical direction for telemetry data. This architect role defines the telemetry platform, data models, and OpenTelemetry standards, partnering with Data and AI Platform teams on Databricks and MLflow integration.

You will own telemetry collection, modeling, storage, and analytics, drive cross-team adoption, and mentor engineers while balancing fidelity and cost at scale.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems or observability infra.
• Deep observability: metrics, logs, traces at scale.
• Telemetry data engineering with open table formats and Spark-like processing.
• Experience with Databricks platforms and MLflow for model telemetry.
• Strong IaC skills (Terraform) and GitOps workflows.

Responsibilities

• Architect the Telemetry Data Platform across teams.
• Define telemetry data model, schema standards, and conventions.
• Lead OpenTelemetry migration including collector architecture and sampling.
• Integrate AI/agent telemetry with Databricks and MLflow.
• Instrument the data platform for data quality, lineage, and cost.
