Smartsheet is seeking a Senior Principal Data Scientist to set the technical direction for ML models and AI sub-agents across the customer lifecycle. You will architect systems, define standards, and drive roadmaps with product and engineering leaders. You will mentor senior scientists and shape the org’s modeling rigor at scale.

This is a frontline leadership role requiring deep ML expertise, production experience, and a track record of delivering impactful AI initiatives in a SaaS environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 12+ years in data science or related field.
• Track record setting technical direction for applied ML/AI that ships.
• Deep applied ML expertise across traditional ML and deep learning.
• Architect-level agentic AI systems knowledge and safety.
• Strong causal inference, experimental design, and production ML experience.
• Fluent SQL and Python; comfortable with Spark/Databricks and ML frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for ML/AI across the customer lifecycle.
• Architect the sub-agents and governance around evidence, risk, and production safety.
• Define modeling, evaluation, and experimentation standards for the team.
• Ship high-leverage models and sub-agents with senior leadership framing the problem.
• Lead data foundations and knowledge layer sub-agents, with privacy and trust in mind.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and applied AI leaders on strategy and roadmap.
• Mentor staff and principal data scientists and elevate modeling rigor.
