Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin's Applied Research Laboratories seeks a Network and Systems Specialist (Sr Software Engineer) to administer and secure the tactical development network on the Pickle Research Campus. You will manage servers, gateways, Linux workstations, and security controls while guiding infrastructure decisions and documenting procedures.

Required are strong linux, network troubleshooting, and software development skills, plus the ability to work independently and with

Qualifications

• HS/GED required.
• Two programming languages with production experience.
• Three years of software development in complex systems.
• Two years of software development with at least one year of systems administration.
• Experience administering Linux-based systems (kernel modules, drivers, user-space).
• Experience diagnosing server-level and gateway-level issues.
• Ability to make informed decisions on network infrastructure and configuration.
• Ability to follow configuration, security, and documentation standards.

Responsibilities

• Administer, monitor, and maintain servers and gateways supporting the tactical development network.
• Recommend network architecture and infrastructure changes as needed.
• Configure and maintain Linux OS on workstations and servers, including kernel topics.
• Implement firewall/iptables, STIG compliance, and access control.
• Create and maintain documentation for network configurations and procedures.
• Perform other related functions as assigned.
