Job summary

SMA America is seeking a Senior Electrical Test and Failure Investigation Engineer, Medium Voltage, to lead hands-on MV field investigations and testing. You will identify root causes of failures in transformers, switchgear and converters, coordinating with cross-functional teams across the globe from Rocklin, CA.

Strong English and MV testing experience are essential. The role offers remote work within the United States, with travel 20–30% to customer sites and the Rocklin headquarters.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or equivalent education/experience; Master’s preferred.
• Minimum 7 years of combined experience in electrical testing, field service, failure investigation, R&D or quality engineering.
• Hands-on field failure investigation experience on MV equipment (1 kV–35 kV) such as transformers, switchgear or converters.
• Ability to identify failure mechanisms and root causes using site evidence and test results.
• Experience with structured root-cause methods (8D, 5 Why, Ishikawa, Pareto).
• Proficiency in English; German a plus; strong communication across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead hands-on field investigations of MV equipment failures (transformers, switchgear, converters).
• Conduct MV electrical tests and interpret results to determine failure mechanisms.
• Document investigations using 8D process and quality tools.
• Provide site analyses and technical consultations to customers and service teams.
• Collaborate with HQ and international teams on corrective and preventive actions.
• Travel ~20–30% to customer sites and Rocklin, CA office; support other functions.
