Job summary

Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation seeks a Senior Systems & Mission Engineer to lead modeling, simulation, and wargaming campaigns. The role focuses on contested logistics, national security challenges, and automated analytical workflows across Python-based models in AWS.

You will translate sponsor requirements into architectures, develop prototypes, and work with data scientists, AI engineers, and developers to mature capabilities toward production.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, mission or operational analysis with defense context.
• Ability to turn requirements and model logic into working prototypes and proofs of concept.
• Proficiency in Python and ability to write, test, and troubleshoot code.
• Ability to connect mission artifacts to simulation inputs and results.
• Experience using AWS for prototypes and secure cloud environments.
• Familiarity with agentic AI concepts and human-supervised analytical workflows.
• Strong collaboration with government sponsors and stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Translate sponsor questions into mission objectives, requirements, and performance measures.
• Develop mission decompositions, architectures, CONOPS, and scenarios with traceability.
• Define system requirements, interfaces, and verification plans; assess risk and evidence.
• Design conceptual models and implement working prototypes for testing.
• Develop and test Python-based simulation components and data integrations.
• Configure AWS environments for prototype execution and data management.
• Lead wargaming or analytical workflows with supervised AI elements, ensuring traceability.
• Engage with government sponsors, brief findings, and coordinate with program leadership.
