Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our Search & Intelligence org in Seattle with flexible remote options. You will lead end-to-end ML system development, from problem framing to deployment, with cross-functional teamwork across product, software, data science, and analytics.

You will design and productionize ML models for information retrieval, ranking, personalization, NLP, and large language model applications, while driving experiments and measurable product

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, ML, AI, Data Science, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of professional experience developing and deploying ML/DS solutions in production.
• Strong programming skills in Python and at least one production language (Java/Kotlin/TypeScript).
• Strong knowledge of SQL and large-scale data processing (Spark).
• Experience designing, training, evaluating, deploying, and scaling ML models on large datasets.
• Experience building maintainable production-quality software.
• Familiarity with cloud data/ML environments (AWS, Databricks, or similar).
• Experience designing evaluation strategies, metrics, experiments, and error analyses.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and implementation of state-of-the-art ML algorithms for production environments.
• Own ML projects from concept to deployment, measurement, and improvement.
• Develop scalable data and modeling approaches using large, complex datasets.
• Design robust architectures meeting quality, latency, scale, reliability, privacy, and cost requirements.
• Build ML solutions across information retrieval, search ranking, personalization, NLP, DL, and LLM apps.
• Design experiments, offline evaluations, A/B tests, and error analyses to measure impact.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, analytics, and platform teams to integrate AI capabilities.
• Translate research into reliable, maintainable production systems.
• Identify opportunities to improve model performance, efficiency, and outcomes.
• Communicate decisions, trade-offs, and results to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Mentor ML engineers, contribute to technical strategy, and promote best practices.
• Foster a culture of experimentation, learning, collaboration, and iterative delivery.
