Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the Search & Intelligence organization. You will lead end-to-end ML development, from problem definition to production deployment, across retrieval, ranking, NLP, and large language model applications.

You will partner with product managers, software engineers, data scientists, and analytics teams to translate challenges into scalable AI solutions and mentor other engineers.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, ML, AI, Data Science, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of professional experience deploying ML or data science solutions in production.
• Strong programming in Python and Java/Kotlin/TypeScript.
• Strong SQL knowledge and experience with large-scale data processing like Spark.
• Experience designing training, evaluation, deployment, and scaling ML models.
• Experience building production-quality software and collaborating across teams.
• Familiarity with cloud-based data/ML environments (AWS, Databricks, etc.).
• Ability to design evaluation strategies using metrics, experiments, and error analysis.
• Effective cross-functional collaboration and clear communication.
• Agile mindset with rapid iteration and learning from results.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and deployment of production ML algorithms and models.
• Own ML projects from concept to production, measurement and improvement.
• Develop scalable data and modeling approaches for large datasets.
• Design architectures meeting quality, latency, scale, reliability, privacy, and cost.
• Work on information retrieval, ranking, personalization, NLP, DL, and LLM applications.
• Run rigorous experiments, offline and online evaluations, and error analyses.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, analytics, and platforms teams.
• Translate research into reliable, maintainable, production systems.
• Identify opportunities to improve performance, efficiency, and outcomes.
• Communicate decisions and results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to technical strategy and best practices.
• Foster experimentation culture and continuous learning.
