Atlassian is seeking a Senior Principal Machine Learning Systems Engineer for the Search Platform to drive low-latency, scalable ML-powered search across enterprise data. You will shape long-term technical direction and collaborate with product teams to translate research into production capabilities.

The role is remote-friendly with multiple US office options, and offers opportunities to influence architecture, reliability, and cost efficiency across the platform.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience designing and operating large-scale, low-latency search or retrieval systems.
• Deep ML systems experience including production inference, optimization, and evaluation.
• Strong distributed systems expertise across performance, concurrency, and observability.
• Strong information retrieval and applied ML foundations for vector/hybrid retrieval.
• Track record setting cross-organization technical direction and delivering with senior teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and build high quality agentic search systems addressing tail latency, throughput and scaling.
• Set long-term architecture and roadmap for online retrieval, index serving, and ML inference.
• Establish ML production practices including evaluation, experimentation, and safe rollout.
• Advance production inference for embedding, retrieval, and ranking models via batching and optimization.
• Lead cross-team initiatives, mentor engineers, and align technical and product leadership.
