Job summary

Atlassian is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join the Agentic Search team. You will build agentic search systems that help people and AI agents discover enterprise knowledge, reason through complex questions, and accomplish tasks across products and tools.

You will work with the Search Relevance group to interpret intent, plan searches, and adapt to evidence. The role emphasizes collaboration, evaluation, and applying advances in LLMs to production systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of industry experience in machine learning, including production deployment.
• Strong Python programming skills and production-ready systems.
• Experience with LLM applications, AI agents, information retrieval, or NLP.
• Experience designing experiments and building evaluation datasets to guide improvements.

Responsibilities

• Build agentic search capabilities for AI assistants and developer workflows via APIs and protocols.
• Develop reproducible benchmarks and evaluation tools reflecting realistic tasks.
• Improve search systems using evaluation results, production signals, and feedback.
• Own projects from problem definition to deployment and measurement.
• Collaborate with product, search, and AI teams to shape technical direction and integrations.
• Contribute to design reviews, mentor engineers, and evolve engineering practices.
