Job summary

DMC University Laboratories, Inc. in Detroit seeks a Senior Lab Assistant – Microbiology to perform pre- and post-analytical testing tasks under supervision.

You will handle specimens, assist training, and uphold safety while supporting a High Reliability Culture. Responsibilities include leading daily workflow, troubleshooting routine issues, drawing blood when ordered, labeling and processing specimens, documenting data, and communicating with clinicians.

Qualifications

• Three years experience in a specimen processing and/or phlebotomy role in a health environment.
• Three years of progressively more responsible experience preferred.
• Customer service experience in a service environment preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in training in phlebotomy and specimen processing to meet competency standards.
• Act as daily team lead to ensure workflow continuity.
• Troubleshoot routine processing and phlebotomy issues using trained skills.
• Serve as a resource to Laboratory Assistants and answer policy questions.
• Comply with safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including PPE.
• As trainer, communicate training needs to management.
• Prioritize specimens and ensure stats are processed promptly.
• May draw blood and collect patient information as ordered.
• Generate labels, process specimens, and aliquot per test requirements.
• Ensure specimen integrity and proper submission to testing labs.
• Enter and review lab data; correct errors per policy.
• Explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries.
• Maintain neat work areas; stock supplies and clean equipment.
• May transport specimens and time-stamp requests.
• May prepare media/reagents and perform basic QC checks.
