Job summary

Carpenter Technology Corporation is seeking a Senior Metallurgist for Premium Melting to support VIM, ESR and VAR operations. You will analyze non-conforming material, apply statistics to problem-solving, and drive process improvements across melts.

Travel to customer sites may be required, with collaboration across operations, R&D, and purchasing. The role demands a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science and at least 4 years of relevant experience, plus strong

• 4 years of relevant work experience required.
• Specialized knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
• Specialized knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment; awareness of newest technologies.
• Understanding of statistics, Six Sigma and BPI practices.
• Experience initiating programs and projects, driving results on schedule, and mitigating risks.
• Ability to lead and mentor internal resources and work on cross-functional teams.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ensure quality of melts through melt record review and adherence to procedures.
• Participate in new procedure development and process optimization; establish critical process variables and tests.

• Evaluate and qualify new raw material and refractory sources; review specifications for new products.
• Interact with operations, technical, R&D, purchasing and quality personnel; support customer audits.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

SENIOR METALLURGIST – PREMIUM MELTING (VIM, ESR, VAR)

This person provides a range of technical services to internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals. This position provides technical support to all aspects of the melt shop in which they are assigned (VIM, ESR, VAR).

THE SENIOR METALLIRGIST – PREMIUM MELTING (VIM, ESR, VAR) WILL

• 1. Responsible for making disposition of referred, non-conforming and off-standard material.
• 2. Apply statistical methods to solve problems and design experiments.
• 3. Ensure quality of melts by timely melt record review, verification of adherence to procedures, and frozen practice agreements with customers.
• 4. Participate in new procedure development and process optimization through application of process management and standardized work philosophy, establishment of meaningful critical process variables and process tests, and variation reduction.
• 5. Improve yield, productivity and cost reductions of melt operations.
• 6. Evaluate and qualify of new raw material/refractory sources, specification review for new products, and participation in problem solving customer technical issues related to melting.
• 7. Interact with operations, technical, R&D, purchasing, and quality personnel as well as providing technical support during customer audits.
• 8. Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SENIOR METALLIRGIST – PREMIUM MELTING (VIM, ESR, VAR)

• 1. Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field required.
• 2. 4 years of relevant work experience required.
• 3. Specialized knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
• 4. Specialized knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment. Awareness of newest and latest technologies available.
• 5. Understanding of the application of statistics, six sigma and BPI practices.
• 6. Experience initiating programs and projects, driving results on schedule and anticipating and mitigating risks.
• 7. Ability to provide support and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities with minimal assistance. Ability to lead, support and participate on project teams.
• 8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
• 9. Ability to be a functional individual contributor with minimal supervision.
• 10. Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
• 11. Ability to travel on a limited basis.
• 12. Ability to provide training and education to customers
• 13. Ability to provide mentorship to internal resources as requested within functional area.
• 14. Ability to communicate and collaborate well with production operators on the shop floor to drive improvement in safety, quality, productivity and costs.
