Qualifications

• High School/GED.
• 5 years in Hospital Coding.
• 1 year in Trauma hospital coding.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) OR Certified In-patient Professional Coder (CIC).
• Familiarity with medical terminology.
• Strong data entry skills.
• An understanding of computer applications.
• Ability to work with members of the health care team.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and interprets medical information to determine ICD codes for diagnoses and procedures.
• Abstracts data elements to satisfy statistical requests and enters coded/abstracted information into the designated system.
• Manages unbilled coding report and cash flow considerations.
• Keeps informed of ICD guideline updates and implements changes in daily work.
• Acts as a mentor and subject matter expert to others.
• Participates in process improvement with coding team and management.
