Job summary

Genie Matthews and Associates is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to support mechanical systems in a heavy industrial steel environment, addressing equipment challenges, upgrades, reliability improvements, and capital projects that impact safety and uptime.

You will work on plant-floor troubleshooting, develop specifications, manage contractors, and lead projects from concept through commissioning, with travel as needed and a strong focus on safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
• 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience in heavy industry preferred.
• Strong knowledge of industrial mechanical equipment, hydraulics, and plant systems.
• Experience with melting equipment or steelmaking operations is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, improve, and optimize mechanical and hydraulic systems across the facility.
• Lead reliability and continuous improvement initiatives to boost uptime and efficiency.
• Support and manage melting and steelmaking equipment upgrades, installations, and troubleshooting.
• Provide engineering expertise for large baghouse and environmental systems compliance.
• Lead projects from concept through installation, commissioning, and completion.
• Develop detailed scopes, specs, bids, cost estimates, and schedules.
• Evaluate suppliers, review proposals, negotiate contracts, and oversee outside resources.
• Coordinate with contractors, vendors, Maintenance, Operations, and Engineering teams.
• Manage projects to budgets, schedules, safety requirements, and performance expectations.
• Assist Director of Steelmaking Technology on specialized projects and initiatives.
• Provide hands-on technical support during installations, shutdowns and plant improvements.
• Travel locally and internationally as needed to support projects.
