Job summary

Austal USA in Mobile, AL is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and analysis of ship propulsion, mechanical systems and shipboard structures. You will apply expert judgment on complex engineering challenges and ensure drawings meet contract requirements.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate with production, subcontractors and suppliers, perform cost analyses and trade studies, and ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
• 8+ years in shipbuilding engineering or 12+ years engineering experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Possesses strong leadership skills, ability to help grow company culture.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness and ability to train and mentor employees.
• Able to work independently with limited daily guidance and oversight.
• Understanding of scheduling and ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
• Experienced in interacting with multiple engineering disciplines, production, design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturers.
• Experience reviewing contract requirements and performing detailed specification traces.
• Experience developing technical trade-off studies and engineering cost analyses.
• Computer literate and familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert judgment for the design, development and implementation of engineering products/procedures, shipboard systems and overall ship designs.
• Troubleshoot and solve complex technical issues in a timely manner and communicate expertly researched resolutions to management.
• Establish relationships with other engineers, departments, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure projects are completed on time and to specifications.
• Check designs and drawings for accuracy and adherence to contract requirements.
• Facilitate training, mentoring, and developing other engineers.
• Lead and coordinate with Engineers, Production Personnel, Customer, Regulatory Bodies, Program Management and Equipment Suppliers.
• Comply with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.
• Will lead and direct the work of Engineers I, II, III, Designers and Draftspersons.
