Job summary

Salas O’Brien seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to provide hands-on mechanical and opto-electro-mechanical design support for complex pulsed power and experimental hardware at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, CA. The role requires deep expertise in precision design, GD&T, and cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

The candidate will lead design from concept through fabrication, integration, and testing, working with physicists, engineers, and vendors.

Qualifications

• 15 years of progressively responsible mechanical design experience.
• Experience with Creo/ProENGINEER and/or SolidWorks required.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.5; drawing development and tolerance analysis.
• Experience with pulsed power, high-voltage systems, accelerator technologies, or related national laboratory environments is highly desirable.
• DOE Q clearance is preferred; ability to obtain/maintain clearance.

Responsibilities

• Develop mechanical and opto-electro-mechanical designs for complex experimental systems.
• Translate requirements into detailed 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and design packages.
• Support full design lifecycle from concept to testing and release.
• Apply GD&T and manufacturing considerations to precision hardware.
• Create and release CAD models and drawings in Creo/ProENGINEER and SolidWorks in PDM/PLM.
• Coordinate with machine shops, suppliers, and procurement to meet schedules.
• Lead or guide designers and detailers and ensure quality of deliverables.
• Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, physics, controls, and manufacturing teams.
• Support design reviews and continuous improvement of processes.
