The Southern Environmental Law Center seeks a Litigation Strategy Director, a senior leader responsible for strategy, standards, and professional development that sustain SELC’s high-impact litigation. Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, this role sits at peer level with other senior directors and shapes litigation across offices and jurisdictions.

Competenze

• Ten or more years of litigation experience, including substantial first-chair responsibility in complex civil litigation, through trial and appeal.
• Active license to practice law, or willingness to seek admission to practice, in one of SELC’s six states or Washington, D.C.
• Sound judgment in high-stakes litigation decisions, including when to file, settle, appeal, or pursue a different course.
• A record of developing litigators and coaching junior to senior attorneys.

Mansioni

• Partner with the Chief Program Officer to integrate litigation into program plans and policy strategies across offices.
• Advise on litigation strategy, strengthen significant filings, and prepare for arguments and other proceedings.
• Approve major litigation decisions and oversee litigation approvals and updates to the Board.
• Anticipate legal developments, manage risks, and coordinate with General Counsel on ethics and professional standards.
• Mentor attorneys across SELC to build judgment and advocacy skills for greater responsibility.
• Set priorities for litigation training and foster a culture of legal excellence and collaboration.
• Coordinate strategy with national and regional partners and maintain relationships with clients, counsel, experts, and the broader legal community.
• Represent SELC’s litigation work with donors, press, and the public in collaboration with Communications and Development.
