Job summary

The Southern Environmental Law Center in Charlottesville, VA (with offices nationwide) seeks a Litigation Strategy Director to lead SELC’s litigation strategy, standards, and professional development. The role collaborates with senior leaders to ensure high-impact litigation across jurisdictions and drive excellence in practice.

The Director will mentor attorneys, oversee training, and coordinate with partners, clients, and donors.

Qualifications

• Ten or more years of litigation experience including first-chair responsibility in complex civil litigation.
• Active license to practice law in one of SELC’s states or Washington, D.C.
• Strong knowledge of civil procedure, remedies, and professional responsibility.
• Judgment in high-stakes litigation decisions and strategy.
• Proven ability to develop litigators into effective lead counsel.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Chief Program Officer to integrate litigation into program plans and advocacy across offices and jurisdictions.
• Serve as SELC’s principal advisor on litigation strategy, helping teams make consequential decisions and strengthen filings.
• Approve novel or consequential litigation decisions and oversee first-chair assignments, with board updates.
• Guide development of test cases and precedent-setting litigation; coordinate ethics and professional standards with General Counsel.
• Supervise and mentor attorneys to build sound judgment and strong advocacy skills.
• Set priorities for litigation training and professional development, fostering a culture of legal excellence and collaboration.
