Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group in Texas seeks an experienced Staff Counsel attorney to defend insureds in professional liability disputes, D&O, real estate/title issues, HOA, and general liability matters.

You will manage cases from filing through dismissal, settlement, or trial, coordinating with adjusters and insureds to resolve claims efficiently. Remote, in-office, or hybrid work arrangements are available.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts in Texas.
• 10+ years’ experience in civil litigation, with defense experience preferred.
• Trial experience desired.
• Must have a strong knowledge of current procedural and substantive law, as well as federal, state, and administrative agency rules.
• Must demonstrate the ability to analyze issues, pro-actively develop effective strategies, communicate regularly with claims professionals, document communications, and resolve cases efficiently.
• Must have solid experience in preparing responsive pleadings, handling appearances, motion practice, and valuation of claims, settlement and trials.
• Must be willing to travel as necessary for court hearings, depositions, site inspections, client meetings, and other in-person events.
• Travel and personal appearance required; flexible work arrangements possible.

Responsibilities

• Defend Hanover’s insureds in general liability, real estate/title issues, HOA, D&O, and professional liability disputes.
• Independently conduct depositions, pre-trial discovery, mediations, arbitrations, trials, and related legal activities.
• Maintain frequent communication with claim professionals and clients regarding case status and evaluations.
• Provide legal advice to insureds and claim professionals.
• Negotiate settlements as directed.
• Attend round tables.
