Job summary

AuguStar Financial is looking for an experienced Underwriting Consultant to evaluate and classify high-face-amount life insurance risks with independent judgment. The role focuses on technical expertise, risk selection, and collaboration with internal and external partners to deliver exceptional service.

You will handle large, complex cases, provide second-level reviews, and mentor others while working in a remote environment across various U.S. locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience preferred.
• Minimum 8 years of progressively responsible life insurance underwriting experience, including complex medical and financial underwriting.
• Advanced knowledge of life insurance underwriting principles, human physiology, medical impairments, financial underwriting, occupations, avocations, and reinsurance practices.
• Strong understanding of reinsurance concepts, including retention, automatic binding limits, jumbo limits, and facultative underwriting.
• Excellent analytical, documentation, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to communicate complex underwriting decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a technical resource and mentor within an underwriting team.

Responsibilities

• Independently evaluate and classify complex life insurance applications according to guidelines, pricing assumptions, reinsurance, and risk management.
• Assess medical, financial, occupational, avocational, foreign travel, residency, and other mortality risks while making underwriting decisions.
• Manage large and complex cases with underwriting authority of $5 million or greater without co-signature requirements.
• Provide second-level reviews and co-signature on high-authority or technically complex cases.
• Explain underwriting decisions, adverse actions, and financial determinations to producers, distribution partners, internal sales teams, and Home Office associates.
• Mentor and support other members of the Underwriting department with technical guidance.
