Job summary

Norstella is hiring a Senior Life Sciences Knowledge Engineer to bridge domain science with applied AI. You will curate high-quality fine-tuning datasets and guide model behavior, working with data scientists, ML engineers, and data engineers across multiple cross-functional teams.

The role focuses on documenting guidelines, maintaining dataset provenance, and shaping downstream evaluation metrics to support predictive analytics and insights for clients.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree in life sciences, medical sciences, computer science or equivalent.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in production-grade life science datasets, including with AI-enabled applications.
• Experience with structured publishing platforms and data tools; comfort with automation concepts.
• Experience with large, complex data sets and data cleaning/preprocessing.
• Experience with Generative AI, especially LLMs, including agents, throughout the SDLC.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
• Excellent communication between technical and non-technical teams.

Responsibilities

• Translate complex clinical, regulatory, and life sciences subject matter into repeatable patterns for model training.
• Collaborate with SME and technical teams to shape model behavior and schema.
• Design, build, and refine fine-tuning datasets with input/output pairs.
• Author and maintain annotation guidelines ensuring consistency across contributors.
• Define task taxonomy and output schema with data scientists.
• Train subject matter experts and translate feedback for tooling improvements.
• Run dataset experiments to identify failures and close gaps with SME input.
• Maintain provenance, licensing, and compliance for all datasets.
• Conduct proofs of concept for novel domain capabilities.
• Contribute to knowledge base and agentic workflows design.
