Overview

Brief job description (essential functions of the job):

Class Specifications

Includes library assistants working in the branch libraries whose duties involve greeting and directing patrons, registration of borrowers, charging and discharging of books and other materials, maintaining collections, troubleshooting equipment, typing/word processing, and filing.

Typical Duties

Responsibilities :

  • Greet and direct library patrons in person and over the phone, providing simple directions and information.
  • Explain BPL policies and procedures professionally and courteously.
  • Identify and refer problems to supervisors.
  • Charge and discharge books and materials, and handle fines.
  • Interview applicants for library cards and verify identification.
  • Prepare periodicals for circulation and maintain the collection.
  • Book museum passes.
  • Handle requests, including interlibrary loans, reserve shelves, and send item lists.
  • Shelve, verify, mend, and barcode books; trace records and search for misplaced books.
  • Maintain bulletin boards and exhibition cases.
  • Type simple forms and records.
  • Compile basic statistical data.
  • Operate and troubleshoot equipment such as copiers and computers.
  • Assist patrons with library technology.
  • Sort and route U.S. Mail.
  • Attend training sessions as directed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.
  • Tactful communication skills; ability to work cooperatively.
  • Competency in using personal computers and Windows software.
  • Good judgment, dependability, and punctuality.
  • Ability to focus on details.
  • Must pass a Criminal Offenders Record Information check.
Additional Requirements

Boston residency is required.
