Job description

The Part-Time Library Assistant at the John W. Jacobs Technology Center (JTC) provides direct customer service at the main JTC and the Makerspace desks. Key duties include assisting the public and library staff with computers, scanners, printers, and Makerspace equipment. Responsibilities also involve conducting workshops, setting up equipment for classes, scheduling programs, proctoring online exams, checking STEM Kits in and out, and performing other duties as required.

This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, flexibility, a genuine enjoyment of working with the public, a commitment to public service, and the ability to handle stressful situations. Candidates must demonstrate current PC proficiency, including internet, email, and Microsoft Office skills, along with strong troubleshooting abilities. A High School Diploma or GED is required, with some college preferred. Previous customer service experience is also preferred.

All library positions require criminal background and child abuse clearances, including a report from the Pennsylvania State Police, Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI fingerprint clearance.

Position Details

Note: All employees are considered mandated reporters of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Staff the public service desk at JTC/DMLM.
  2. Respond to customer problems with computers and software, including printing, scanning, saving, and internet searches.
  3. Provide basic instructions on equipment operation and software use.
  4. Troubleshoot minor repairs of scanners and printers.
  5. Operate equipment such as 3D printers, virtual/augmented reality devices, digitizing equipment, etc.
  6. Assist in public computer workshops.
  7. Set up equipment like laptops and projectors.
  8. Address patron inquiries and refer to appropriate personnel when needed.
  9. Monitor and maintain hardware supplies and inventory.
  10. Attend training sessions to stay updated on technology trends.
  11. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the JTC and Makerspace areas.
  12. Check in/out STEM Kits and participate in community outreach.
  13. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and handling up to 25 pounds. Occasionally work with arms above shoulders. The environment is generally quiet, with flexible hours including weekends and evenings.
