Job summary

Apex Systems in Austin/Southlake seeks a Senior Java AI Developer to lead design and delivery of cloud-native, event-driven applications, integrating GenAI into the SDLC.

You will design, build, and modernize Java-based systems with Spring Boot, Kafka, REST, and microservices, while ensuring high availability and observability on GCP/AWS.

The role requires 7+ years in Java, strong leadership, and a passion for AI-assisted engineering; a hybrid work setup is offered in Texas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent).
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with Java and enterprise application development.
• Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Experience with cloud-native development (GCP, Kubernetes, Docker) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with messaging, observability (e.g., Splunk), and production support.
• Database experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, or Aerospike.
• Experience leading technical delivery, design, code reviews, and engineering standards.
• Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools across the SDLC.
• Knowledge of Agile methodologies, Jira, and Confluence.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.

Senior Java AI Developer || Hybrid in Austin, TX or Southlake, TX

Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Java AI Developer to lead the design and delivery of scalable, cloud-native, event-driven applications while driving adoption of AI-assisted software development practices. This role combines deep Java engineering expertise with modern cloud, messaging, and Generative AI capabilities to support critical business platforms and modernization initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and modernize Java-based applications using Spring Boot, Kafka, REST APIs, and microservices.
• Build scalable, resilient, and observable cloud-native solutions on platforms such as GCP, AWS, or PCF.
• Partner with architects, product owners, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
• Leverage GenAI tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Gemini, etc.) to accelerate development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and modernization efforts.
• Establish and promote AI-assisted engineering best practices, including prompt engineering and validation standards.
• Drive code quality, performance, resiliency, observability, and production readiness.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across development initiatives.
• Support transformation efforts from legacy platforms to distributed, event-driven architectures.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with Java and enterprise application development.
• Strong expertise in:

• 6+ years of cloud-native development experience using GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Database experience with relational and NoSQL technologies such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, or Aerospike.
• Experience leading technical delivery, solution design, code reviews, and engineering standards.
• Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools across the SDLC.
• Knowledge of Agile methodologies, Jira, and Confluence.
• Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in a related technical field.
• Experience with Spring Cloud, Spring Security, Reactive Programming, API Gateways, or Service Mesh technologies.
• Experience with TDD, BDD, QA automation, and quality engineering practices.
• Background in performance engineering, resiliency testing, and large-scale platform modernization.
• Familiarity with AI technologies such as LLMs, RAG, vector databases, and agent-based workflows.
• Financial services or broker-dealer industry experience.
