Job summary

University of Michigan Health in Lansing, MI seeks an Inpatient Coding Specialist to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and determine MS-DRG/APR-DRG based on payor classification, while adhering to AHIMA and CMS guidelines.

You will extract and review clinical information, ensure POA indicators, and collaborate with CDI to improve documentation, maintaining quality and productivity in a healthcare setting.

Qualifications

• Coding proficiency with ICD-10-CM/PCS; 80% or better in coding tests.
• Experience in a major academic medical center and ICD-10-CM/PCS is preferred.
• Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Extracts, reviews, and analyzes clinical information to translate data into codes for hospital billing and reporting.
• Assigns ICD-10 diagnoses and procedures and determines MS-DRG/APR-DRG based on payor classification.
• Verify discharge disposition and ensure POA indicators are assigned to codes.
• Collaborate with CDI team to clarify documentation for accurate coding and reimbursement.
• Keep up with coding guidelines and participate in training and meetings.

Education

High School Diploma/GED

Associate Degree in Health Information Technology/Management - preferred.
