Markel is hiring an experienced Underwriting Specialist to underwrite inland marine risks and renewals, driving profitability within the Midwest region. You will assess exposures, leverage pricing tools, and coordinate with management on account strategies.

The role emphasizes mentorship of junior underwriters, cross-selling across Markel divisions, and collaboration with producers to maintain strong relationships. US work authorization is required.

Qualifications

• 6+ years underwriting inland marine or related business
• Proven track record with retail distribution
• Knowledge of pricing using loss rating and actuarial tools
• Excellent oral and written communication
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
• Team player in a flexible environment

Responsibilities

• Review inland marine risks to ensure profitability for Markel
• Communicate with underwriting management on accounts and producers
• Underwrite new business to achieve underwriting profit
• Review submissions for exposure and risk
• Underwrite renewal business and handle related servicing
• Monitor profitability and production of the book of business
• Develop relationships within the region and with product line management
• Participate in audits and underwriting meetings
• Cross-sell with other Markel divisions
• Opportunity to mentor junior underwriters
• Coordinate with other Markel products on common accounts
• Travel within the Midwest region
