Job summary

Markel Group seeks an experienced Underwriting Specialist to profitably underwrite inland marine risks and renewals across the Midwest. You will apply pricing, risk analysis, and state policy language to protect profitability and support agents.

This role offers collaboration with underwriting management, mentoring junior underwriters, and travel within the Midwest. A Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of underwriting experience are expected, with industry designations valued.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6+ years of current experience underwriting inland marine or related business.
• Bachelor’s degree and industry designations; proven experience can substitute education.
• Proven reputation with retail distribution.
• Knowledge of pricing accounts using loss rating and actuarial modeling tools/techniques.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills.

Responsibilities

• Review inland marine risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
• Communicate with underwriting management on accounts and producers; advise on operations and procedures.
• Underwrite and select new business for underwriting profit.
• Review submissions to identify exposure and risk.
• Underwrite renewal business; review terms and pricing; service related accounts.
• Monitor profitability and production for assigned producers.
• Assess overall book of business and recommend corrective action.
• Develop relationships within region and coordinate with product lines.
• Participate in audits or underwriting meetings as required.
• Cross-sell opportunities with Markel divisions.
