Job summary

Redwood Materials is seeking a Substation Protection and Control Engineer to join our EPC team. The role focuses on high voltage design for industrial substations (69kV–345kV) and integration with transmission lines, supporting renewable and energy storage initiatives.

Responsibilities include developing diagrams, protection schemes, relay coordination, and HV equipment selection. You will collaborate with utilities and internal teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure code compliance across

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Electrical Engineering degree required (B.S. or M.S.).
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible; must obtain Nevada license and South Carolina reciprocity within 2 months.
• Minimum 10 years of high voltage design experience, preferably in EPC environments.
• Experience with transmission-level load flow and stability tools (PSSE/PSLF).

Responsibilities

• Lead design of high voltage AC electrical systems for substations (69kV–345kV) and interface with transmission lines.
• Review existing substations to improve reliability and stability.
• Develop single-line diagrams, layouts, protection and coordination, and grounding plans.
• Perform grid simulations with PSSE/PSLF/PSCAD/ASPEN OneLiner.
• Interface with utilities/ISO/RTOs for interconnection studies and permitting.
• Conduct short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies.
• Develop relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalents.
• Select HV equipment including switchgear, transformers, and protection relays.
• Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record and lead code reviews (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA).
• Coordinate with civil/structural teams for layout and site development.
• Support field teams with testing and commissioning.
